Case: NS Dashboard Railway Station Utilities

Developing a responsive multiplatform app to monitor the status of public transport scanning technology

Client: NS (Dutch Railways)

We designed and helped develop a responsive multiplatform app to monitor the status of public transport scanning technology. This technology is used in gates, poles and selling points, all of which communicate with consumer’s smartcards. Working together with Java developer First8, we built an application enabling the NS to monitor the operational status of this scanning technology throughout the Netherlands, it’s railway stations and station zones. The data is presented in user friendly list, map and dashboard views.

The Challenge

Every day over a million travellers check in and out at railway stations all over the Netherlands using personal smart cards. It needs no explanation that the technology scanning these smart cards can and will break down. Managing these incidents is a clear priority for the Dutch Railways. However, there was no user friendly system in place to relay incident data to relevant user groups.

Our Solution

We designed a multi-platform application that caters for the needs of all user types. Mechanics use the application’s map and list based views to find and fix broken down equipment. Additionally, their managers gain insight into the operational status of scanning equipment on a national level, using an infographic styled dashboard view presenting key performance indicators.
